Journal Entry 317 – Short One

Another week in the books. No major plateau busting this week other than I’m crunching the most for abs I ever have before. I really do think working abs almost every day has really helped increase my lifts. Still doing very little isolation and sticking to the Push / Pull / Abs everyday setup

Life:

Sarah and I are going to a party tonight with some of my co-workers. Our company has a big release set for Monday, so we figured we would party before the extra stress starts from work. Another Pro Tip: Keep dietary fat low on the days you drink. This greatly reduces the risk of storing fat.

Other than that I’ve been watching the original Berserk show on DVD, that I borrowed from my good friend Cameron. It’s been awesome so far. Very graphic show, but it is anime. It is far from a fairy tale and the theme is very dark. It has very little lighthearted comic relief like a lot of other shows have, but I think this make for a more dramatic and epic show. I’m a huge soundtrack fan, so here is a song from the show: Gut’s Theme.

Journal Entry 316 – 225 Club

Another week in the books. This was actually my long week at work, but it felt pretty short overall which is nice.

Training has been great this week. I increased my bench to 225lbs for reps of 7, 5, 5. This is, of course, using a full range of motion. I’ve also been increasing my incline dumbbell bench up to 85lbs in each hand for about 3 sets of 6 reps. My chinups have not been going up as much as I would have liked. I always seem to plateau on those for some reason. However, the lat pulldowns and t-bar rows I have been doing have been going way up. I’ve been doing cable crunches every day on the same machine. I’m up to 130lbs of resistance for about 6-8 reps. The entire stack goes up to 160lbs. Once I hit this number, I plan on just increasing the reps. I think doing these abs movements every day is really helping me with my bench press.

As for diet, pretty much more of the same. I’m really not sure if the way I’m eating is helping me increase my lifts so much or literally just the way I’ve arranged my split. Could also be a combination of both. I will admit that the past 3 days my diet has been all over the place. It didn’t seem to hurt my bench though!

Journal Entry 311 – Putting In Work

Training:

Had a really good week in the gym. I did a 5 day Push/Pull/Legs/Push/Pull workout setup with cardio on the weekend. Hit my heavy bench press and heavy rows early in the week and finished the week with higher volume and lighter moves. Not sure why, but I was really feeling EZ bar skullcrushers and curls. I got a tremendous pump towards the end of my workout from those.

Overall my strength is still slowly increasing. At this point, I really just want to be consistent with my workouts. It feels like the more I go to the gym the stronger I get, especially with back.

I also did some cardio twice this week of around 30-40 minutes.

Diet:

I have been going pretty low carb recently with good results. My weight was at 185.6lbs at a high early this week (not sure how as this is high for me) and is now around 182.2lbs. I have noticed though that I do look leaner at a heavier weight, which is always a good sign in terms of body composition.

My diet is pretty simple during the week. I have two protein shakes during the day with one being mid-morning and the other in the afternoon when I get back from the gym. I also have some Our Little Rebellion Protein Chips almost every day. This gives me a ton of protein and not a ton of calories. At night I then usually eat a pretty large meal, which is usually low carb, but not always. I then finish the night with another protein shake with berries in it. I really enjoy that protein shake. It tastes better than ice cream to me.

So the above has very consistent elements, but dinner also allows me a lot of flexibility. I can pretty much eat whatever I’m feeling at dinner. It’s almost always a healthy meal, but not always. Eating like this I don’t really feel the need for cheat days, because I can eat whatever I want every day at dinner. I’m pretty busy during the day at work, so I really don’t like messing with meal prep anymore. I enjoy undereating during the day so I can eat a big dinner when I can sit down to enjoy it.

This may seem like common sense, but the more I workout the better I look. Even when I eat healthy and don’t workout I don’t look nearly as good as I do when I do some sort of exercise every day. To me it’s pretty noticeable. It also benefits my mental health and allows me to eat more food as well.

Life:

I had a company function at place called the Circuit Bar in Richmond, Virginia. Very fun place and it had tons of old games and a ton of craft beer that was self-serve. I got the high score in Skee-ball with 320. Also, played some Tekken 3 and Madden. Sarah and I then went out to a place called Dont Look Back after with some friends and played some pool. I was out from 4-12 PM yesterday and worked from 9-2 PM. Busy day, but fun. Only thing that sucks is I really only have one day off of free time to relax.

I watched the NBA finals this year, which is something I almost never do. Not a huge basketball fan anymore, since Kobe Bryant retired. He was always my favorite player. That being said Lebron James is a beast. He carried a very mediocre team to the Finals. I almost felt bad for him.  His team was so bad, he almost had no chance of winning against Golden State. Also, not a big Golden State fan. Draymond Greene is probably the most annoying player I have ever seen and his talent is way smaller than his ego. He is just along for the ride, while Steph Curry and Kevin Durant carry the team. Klay Thompson is also one of the most consistent shooters I have ever seen. I think he gets overshadowed by Curry and Durant and probably by Greene, but only because Greene is an obnoxious loudmouth. Not surprised by the outcome of the NBA Finals, but the Playoffs were enjoyable to watch.

Journal Entry 298 – Short One

Finished training last Thursday, so my schedule will go back to normal this week. Sarah and I went to Greensboro last week and did some stuff for the wedding. It’s only a couple months away, which is strange to think about.

In contrast to last week, I actually lifted every day last week doing a full body workout every day. Enjoyable, but the problem was I would get pretty sweaty at the gym and then have to go back to work after. Not fun.

My bench press has been going back up and right now stands at 215lbs for 8, 5, 5 reps. I literally have done heavy bench every other day and it seems to be going up pretty steadily. I have also done very little cardio, except for some light walking all week. When I got back to my new schedule, I will start doing cardio again. I have also incorporated some legs back into my routine and the soreness is already gone.

My diet has been pretty high protein and calories have been around 2000-2300 calories a day. This seems to be a good amount for me to stay around most of the time. Good energy, good strength in the gym and since I eat pretty balanced, I can pretty much eat whatever I want within this calorie range.

Journal Entry 297 – Training / Light Week

It’s going to be a short entry this week. Due to training at work, my schedule as shifted from Monday and Thursday 9-8pm. Not a bad setup, but it leaves you very little free time during the week. You basically drive home, eat dinner, watch an hour of TV and go to bed. Rinse and repeat. I only lifted one-day last week, due to this busy schedule. My days are very busy at work, which is nice from “it flys by standpoint”, but I haven’t had a huge urge to rush off to the gym on busy days like this. I used this one hour period last week for time to just sit and relax.

My bench was down last week. I also had some strange shoulder pain in my front delts when doing pushups. They felt very tight and not good. So I basically took the week off from lifting. I did run about 5 miles on Friday and took Saturday off. I’ll probably go lift today, but not sure what next week holds.

My calories were pretty low this week, especially during the workweek. I didn’t really have time to eat until my lunch break at 12pm and 8:30pm at night when I got home.  I plan to have a higher calorie day today, but I got a feeling next week may be similar to last week in terms of training and eating. In other words, not good.

I’ve been watching a lot of Youtube on my time off. There is a channel called Star Wars Theory that has very interesting content. Been kind of on a Star Wars spree recently, probably just to nerd out and get out of reality for awhile. Also, listening to Broderick Chavez who is a powerlifter and basically a comedian. He talks a lot about diet and nutrition and is very entertaining to listen to.

Also, really glad the Eagles won the Super Bowl. Nick Foles seems likes a really good guy and it’s nice seeing a different team win it besides the Patriots.

Journal Entry 296 – Too Much Fiber

So I’ve been hitting a calorie deficit for about 2-3 weeks without really cheating in awhile. I’d have a day where I would eat more, but not really a cheat day. Yesterday I decided to have a large cheat meal of whatever I wanted. I decided on Cheese Fries from Kickback Jacks along with a Chicken Ceasar Salad and some wings. I woke up this morning looking much fuller than I have in awhile. I actually look like I lift again! It’s amazing what flat looking muscles can do to your physique and mind when cutting. Not fun.

I was really pumped to get back into a higher protein / lower carb way of eating, but realized I was overdoing it on high fiber / low carb food items. This really can wreck your digestion and make you bloated. I always love how Nutritionists latch on to certain ideas like “Fiber is the best thing you can eat” or “It’s almost impossible to get too much fiber, because it’s good for your gut bacteria.” Um yeah, actually it’s extremely easy to get too much fiber and getting too much can literally wreck you. When you add in high fiber tortillas/bread on top of fruits and vegetables and high fiber protein bars (almost all of them in today’s world), then you have just very easily hit well over 50-60 grams. I think I even hit 80 grams one day. I swear it felt like it took me 3 days to clear my bowels and just to feel like I didn’t have a full stomach all the time. After it finally was clear, I decided to go on a very low fiber diet and I felt very good and I looked even better. My stomach was consistently flat all day. I used to wake up with a flat stomach and go to bed looking like buddah. With low fiber, it’s always flat. It’s easy to overlook factors in your diet that you associate with being healthy when in reality they can be a problem. High fiber leads to almost constant distension and a not very aesthetic appearance.

Some foods I have found to be very beneficial to this way of eating AKA non-bloat:

  • Wings
    • I’ve really been into wings recently. A little bit higher fat, but I always save some room for fattier items in my diet.
  • Peanut Butter
    • Doesn’t bloat me at all.
  • Meat
    • Mainly eating Tyson chicken strips, but digests well.
  • Egg Whites
    • Can make you a little gassy, but not overly bloated.
  • Berries
    • Small handful. Berries don’t bloat me like other fruits.
  • Green Vegetables
    • Well cooked and only small amounts at once.

Journal Entry 256

Another week of grinding. I have really been bumping up the carbs in my diet recently. I’ve noticed a lack of hunger way more often and the feel of being truly satisfied after eating. Really nice feeling. Workouts have been good as well. Strength is still slowly increasing, although I feel like my muscular endurance could be better. After my 4th – 5th set of a compound move, I’m basically done at that point. I can hammer out some light reps with an iso move, but it still feels pretty tough at that point.

Weekly Split:

  • Chest / Tris
  • Back / Bis
  • Shoulders
  • Chest / Tris
  • Rest
  • Rest
  • Back / Bis

Cardio was done on 4 days a week. Got the runners high every single time too. I’ve started to mix in an incline walk after a couple of miles or so just to mix it up. I’ll probably add back in some cardio every day again, though. Really feel mentally sharp at work, when I do this.

Had a high weigh in of 185lbs this morning. Been hovering around 180-182lbs, but I had a lot of food yesterday, easily exceeding 3000 calories. Since my focus is building muscle, I really don’t care that much. I still look just as lean as I usually do. 😉
