Journal Entry 319 – Miscellaneous

I’m just going to do a quick update this week. No post last week as it was a very busy week at work and I didn’t have a ton of time or energy to write a post.

I have hit somewhat of a plateau in my lifts recently. I have also felt more stressed out recently, which I know goes hand in hand with the gym. My meals at night have been less keto/high protein-oriented and more or less just eating whatever I want. I have noticed a couple of days this week my dietary fat was unintentionally very low. Like 30 grams or so. I definitely felt “off” the next day. I may remedy this with a full week of eating what I think is optimal. This consists of high protein meat-based meals and a low carb content. Let’s see if that jumpstarts me a little bit.

Other than that, the Giants and Hokies are both failing. Giants can’t score points at all and Hokies lost to ODU. Great! (sarcasm intended). Also, my number one draft pick in Fantasy Football, Leveon Bell, hasn’t played a game because he “isn’t making enough money.” Don’t even get me started on this fool. Once Eli Manning is done my interest in football is going to take one hell of a step down from where it is now. If my interest in football is currently a 10, once Eli is gone it will be more like a 5.

I’m also thinking about getting a PS4. Mainly for Star Wars Battlefront 2, which is an incredibly fun game. Kylo Ren is hands down the best character in that game. They are also going to add Anakin Skywalker and Obi-Wan in future updates, so yeah this game is a must buy. I’ve also had the PS3 for at least 5 years. Considering the system may be a bit pricey at first at $299, it lasts several years and holds its value well. Also, since the PS4 has been out a while, a lot of the games are very cheap now.

Journal Entry 315 – 3 Week Hiatus

Today marks the end of my 3-week hiatus. I’ve had a lot going on recently and never really had a chance to sit down and write a post. Over the past 2 weeks, Sarah and I bought a dog! It is a shih-tzu / bichon mix that is 100% hypoallergenic. This was more for Sarah than for me as I’m not allergic to any dogs. We named him Luke after Luke Skywalker. Coincidentally he was born on 5/4/2018, which is Star Wars day and the date of our rehearsal dinner. Not going to lie, he is a lot of work. More work than I thought it would be and I’ve had dogs my entire life, but it has been awhile since I had a puppy and I forgot the amount of energy these dogs have. Also, he’s a lot of money. I know startup costs are high, but if you are running low on money and are thinking about getting a pet, I highly recommend thinking again.

I do have good news to report in terms of my lifting progress. I set a personal record on the bench press for 225lbs at 6 reps. The bench has felt fantastic recently and I actually did that with a cold. I’ve been sick since I left the beach last weekend, but it did not seem to affect my lifts. Recently I’ve been prioritizing the bench above all else in the gym. The prioritization has paid off. My goal is to get my bench press to 225lbs for 3 sets of 8 reps with ease. Once I hit this, my bench lifting goals will pretty much be complete. Funny enough my weight has been going down as well. I’m sitting at roughly 179lbs. I’m benching more at this weight than I was at 185lbs. My goal is to get down to the 170-175lbs range, while continuing to increase my strength. My overall volume in the gym has been low recently. My diet consists of a ton of protein and little carbs and moderate fats at the moment. This is my go-to when trying to lose fat and look my best. Since my volume is low, my strength has still been going up as there isn’t a ton of muscular damage to repair. I have barely run at all recently as well. I think once in the last month.

My workout schedule is heavy bench 3 sets of 6-8 reps 3 times a week every other day. I then do a Pull movement for 4 sets of 6-10 reps (heavy) and then an abs movement for 3 sets of 6-10 reps.

On the days, I’m not doing a bench I do the same setup scheme, but usually either an Incline Dumbell Press or Pushups instead of flat bench. I’ve found that by keeping the volume low each day, I can come back the next day and hit it hard regardless of what I did the day before. Obviously works since my bench has been skyrocketing recently.

My diet is pretty simple at the moment:

  • 2 12oz Coffees with half and half
  • Protein Shake
  • 2 hardboiled eggs
  • WORKOUT
  • *Our Little Rebellion Protein Crisps 1 5oz bag (eaten throughout the day)
  • Nicotine Gum
  • 12oz of either ground Turkey Meat or Beef with cheese and small amounts of vegetables
  • Protein Pudding with blueberries

That is pretty much it almost every single day. Sounds boring, but I really like it. It’s helping me shred fat and increase my lifts at the same time. Don’t mind if I do.

Journal Entry 299 – David Goggins / Star Wars

Routine and David Goggins

I listened to a Joe Rogan podcast earlier this week and was really inspired by a guest named David Goggins he had on the show. David Goggins was a navy seal that grew up with a really hard childhood and slowly but surely made something of himself through the military. He then became and an ultra-endurance athlete to respect the memory of his fallen comrades in battle. His psyche is really incredible and it was a very enjoyable 2 hours listening to him. He’s one of the most motivating people I have ever heard. One of his most amazing accomplishments is losing 100lbs in 2 months before he joined the military so that he could enlist due to their height and weight requirements. Not many people can say they have done that.

Anyway, he inspired me to take reevaluate my own routine. I have decided to run at least 3-5 miles a day 5 days a week and do a minimum of 200 pushups every day. I also want to spend at least 5 minutes a day stretching as he recommends this highly for health and stress relief. Due to my schedule, it can be tough to get into the gym and do cardio on Friday and Saturday, so I decided I will make these my heavy lifting days. So basically only lifting heavy 2 days a week for the time being.

Star Wars

I have also been really into Star Wars recently for some reason. I have watched movies 2-6 and will probably finish The Force Awakens today. I really enjoy some of the philosophy behind it and it’s a pretty powerful story. It definitely has some goofy elements that I’m not a huge fan of, but still.

My favorite character by far is Anakin Skywalker. He had way more power than any other character and I really enjoyed his story. Darth Vader is an awesome character, but it does suck how Anakin was literally half dead when he put the suit on. Darth Vader’s suit was a walking life support system. I guess it shows how powerful of a character he really is if he was basically dead but still ruled the entire galaxy!

Favorite movie was Revenge of the Sith. Let’s face it, that lightsaber battle was amazing and powerful between two friends. I also liked how the two had the exact same fighting style, which makes perfect sense because Obi-Wan taught Anakin for 20 years.

Runner-up Favorite Characters were Luke Skywalker, Padme and Kylo Ren.

The most overrated character was Yoda. Yoda was a troll. He was supposed to be this all knowing creature, but couldn’t sense that Chancellor Palpatine (who was the leader of the Galactic Senate for two decades) was the emperor. The emperor was the most evil character by far and “reeked” of the dark side / negative energy. How the hell did he not “sense” that through the force. Also, the lame/strict Jedi rules eventually led Anakin down the path of the dark side, which ruined his life and the lives of the entire Jedi Order and many other countless individuals who were killed by the Empire. He was also mean as hell to Luke when they first met. He told him he was “too old to train.” Yoda knew about Luke since he was born. Why didn’t you seek him out sooner to train rather than waiting 20 years? Yoda also acted like a goofy old man. I mean he wasn’t all bad because he did teach Luke, but like I said VERY OVERRATED.

As a final note, the Sith Code is better than the Jedi Code. Just saying. 😉

Journal Entry 297 – Training / Light Week

It’s going to be a short entry this week. Due to training at work, my schedule as shifted from Monday and Thursday 9-8pm. Not a bad setup, but it leaves you very little free time during the week. You basically drive home, eat dinner, watch an hour of TV and go to bed. Rinse and repeat. I only lifted one-day last week, due to this busy schedule. My days are very busy at work, which is nice from “it flys by standpoint”, but I haven’t had a huge urge to rush off to the gym on busy days like this. I used this one hour period last week for time to just sit and relax.

My bench was down last week. I also had some strange shoulder pain in my front delts when doing pushups. They felt very tight and not good. So I basically took the week off from lifting. I did run about 5 miles on Friday and took Saturday off. I’ll probably go lift today, but not sure what next week holds.

My calories were pretty low this week, especially during the workweek. I didn’t really have time to eat until my lunch break at 12pm and 8:30pm at night when I got home.  I plan to have a higher calorie day today, but I got a feeling next week may be similar to last week in terms of training and eating. In other words, not good.

I’ve been watching a lot of Youtube on my time off. There is a channel called Star Wars Theory that has very interesting content. Been kind of on a Star Wars spree recently, probably just to nerd out and get out of reality for awhile. Also, listening to Broderick Chavez who is a powerlifter and basically a comedian. He talks a lot about diet and nutrition and is very entertaining to listen to.

Also, really glad the Eagles won the Super Bowl. Nick Foles seems likes a really good guy and it’s nice seeing a different team win it besides the Patriots.

Journal Entry 291 – Star Wars / Busy Weekend

Very busy weekend for Sarah and I this past weekend. We had a party at a co-workers house on Friday night, I worked all day Saturday then went to see Star Wars on Saturday night. Sunday we went to my parent’s house and all day Monday we went to the Williamsburg Outlets to do most of Christmas shopping. Today I had to go to the doctor, workout and ran to the grocery store. This weekend literally felt like a blink of an eye. That being said it was a really fun weekend and everything turned out good in the end.

I literally consumed probably 4500 calories easy on Friday night at that party. My co-worker made some awesome food that was hard to resist. I also consumed a decent amount of alcohol. 😉

Star Wars was a really awesome movie. I give it 8 out of 10. It also had one of the most awesome scenes I have seen, which definitely boosted the rating. There were some things that I found kind of annoying and a major plot twist that I really didn’t like. It was still very enjoyable.

Sarah and I went to Williamsburg to shop at the outlet malls. I ended up getting some clothes and a new travel bag. I literally use my travel bag every single day. Got a good deal on a Swiss Gear travel bag for $60. I’m a minimalist so it can be very difficult to shop for me or even surprise me. Mainly because I don’t like a lot of crap, so sometimes what people think of as a surprise is to me a useless item that I will likely not use haha. I’m a simple man. Sarah didn’t find much, unfortunately.

As for training and diet it has been very sporadic. My training is more or less on par with where it has been. Could probably clean up the diet a bit to be honest. Just more protein and less fat and processed carbs.

Journal Entry 284 – Winging It

Not going to lie, I get very bored with training and dieting at certain points in my life. I almost have to change up what I do to prevent this from setting in. Training with low volumes and long rest periods can be fun when you are getting stronger week to week, but dear god it is boring. It’s like can I just hit the gym, get a great pump and move on with my day. It’s just so slow. Eating the same foods can be very similar to this. I start to eat the same foods over and over and crave them less and less and it all just gets so boring.

I’m going to wing it for the time being. I want to keep one boring strength day in the gym to keep my strength and the other days will be higher volume full body lifting. Cardio will be done when I have time, but I’m not going to stress about it.

As for nutrition, the same logic applies. I simply want to eat what I feel like eating without overeating on crap. Eat foods I enjoy and move on with life. The majority of the time I undereat during the day and eat more at night. This is by far the most enjoyable way of eating I have found. My stress levels tend to decrease when I eat like this. I usually have 2 protein puddings and some random stuff during the early part of my day for roughly 800-1000 calories. Then at night I eat whatever I want or feel that day. This eliminates cravings and doesn’t make you want to binge on the weekend or your cheat day. You are quite simply spreading all the food you like throughout the week and eating it in a much more enjoyable fashion. It also makes you appear more of an enjoyable person, who isn’t constantly obsessed with maintaining some lame diet plan that no one cares about.

Random Tidbits:

  • Joe Rogan’s podcast continues to provide me with hours of entertainment
  • Age of Empires 3 is a great game
  • Giants SUCK!
  • Carson Wentz is a BEAST! Really impressive to watch play. He’s a very accurate passer and tough runner.
  • Hokies are playing awesome!
  • Apparently, there is such a thing as a grey Jedi with a white lightsaber. They are neutral, who simply try to maintain the balance between the two sides. This is awesome.
  • Random pushups are incredible for an energy boost when you feel out of it.
