Journal Entry 338 – Giants

Another week in the books. It was an interesting one at my company for sure. Mostly positive, but could see some changes for sure. Sarah’s parents were in town this weekend and we knocked out some much-needed yard work. This was the first week all year our yard was not covered in mud and it wasn’t freezing outside. We cleaned up all the gumballs, leaves, buried sticks, logs, and trimmed the bushes. Then we bagged it all up and took it to the dump. Lot of work, but it looks a lot better. That yard is an ongoing project though. We still need to put dirt or sand in certain places of the yard as it constantly pools with water with even the smallest amount of rain. We also went out to Red Salt Chophouse and Sushi and Grapevine for dinner this weekend. Both were great as usual.

As for working out this week, I was not feeling three heavy bench days. I think two is the magic number because one is definitely not enough. I think two heavy days on Monday and Thursday and two light days on Tuesday and Friday is where it’s at. Wednesday is a rest day. The light days would just be pushups, chinups, light abs and stretching. I may even start running on the weekends, at least one day, now that the weather is nice again.

The Giants have been making some moves recently. I’m actually loving it. Dave Gettleman, the Giants GM is getting a lot of hate for his recent moves, but I think these are mainly coming from morons on social media platforms (likely millennials) who really have no clue what they are talking about and think a team is a good as its skill players. As you can tell didn’t work out great for us last year. Odell Beckham was traded to the Browns for a first round pick, a third round pick and a veteran Safety. Beautiful trade. Beckham was a double-edged sword. I like the guy, but on one hand, he was an explosive talent and on the other, a huge drama filled distraction that was either injured or crying. He may act like he was unselfish, but when you go on ESPN and cry that you’re not getting the ball enough and that your QB is the reason your team is losing, you just lost all respect. I think Gettleman felt the same way. Eli Manning made Beckham. End of story. If it wasn’t for Eli, Beckham would not be half the receiver he is viewed as today. Eli did that repeatedly over this career with different receivers including Plaxico Burress, Victor Cruz, Hakeem Nicks, Mario Manningham, David Tyree, and Steve Smith. You know what happened to these receivers after they left the Giants? Their careers basically ended.

I’ve been watching this game a long time and I respect the hell out of what Gettleman is doing and I love that he has the courage to do it. The team needed to be gutted and that is exactly what he did to it. ESPECIALLY THAT HORRIBLE DEFENSE AND OLINE. But he also correctly realized that Eli was not the one to blame for all of the Giants woes that the hate-filled media would like you to believe. Besides the dead cap space, I think we are on the right track. I’m actually really looking forward to the draft and the upcoming season. As long as we don’t get Haskins. For the love of God not Haskins. Recent reports say we are not actively investing time into Haskins and this is music to my ears. Again, this man does not impress me at all. He’s out of shape, slower than Eli Manning by a decent amount, inconsistent (watch some combine footage. Highlights don’t tell the whole story), coming from Ohio State (historically bad QBs in NFL), played ONE YEAR in college and benefited from the offensive spread system he was in. I do not seem him transitioning well to a pro-style offense, which is exactly what the Giants run. Don’t get me wrong I love the spread style offense. If I was the coach I would have at least a 75% pass to 25% run ratio. But that is not how things work on the Giants. Avoid this guy. Daniel Jones and likely Rosen would be a much better fit.

Journal Entry 329 – New Year

Even though it was a Holiday last weekend, it really didn’t feel like it. My good friend had a bachelor party and a small wedding. Sarah and I also held a small party after the wedding for a small reception/New Years Eve party. We had a great time and it was fun meeting his family and also hanging out with close friends. But it was a lot of work setting up the house and then cleaning the house after both the bachelor party and reception on New Years. Worth it, but 5 days off never felt so quick!

Luckily the work week was short the first week back. Went back on Wednesday and it was a pretty steady week overall. The only problem was I had a hell of a time falling asleep last week. I think it had a lot to do with the drinking and messed up sleep schedule of the previous weekend. I would literally almost get an adrenaline rush as soon as I went to bed. I think this was almost a panic reaction of realizing that I would not be able to fall asleep as quickly as I wanted. Every single morning last week, I literally felt like a zombie going to work. My eyes felt half open. Not a fun feeling. I slept in this weekend both days so far to try and recoup some sleep. I hope this doesn’t happen again next week.

My gym performance wasn’t too bad this week. I’m benching 235lbs for my top set of 6 reps. I then drop down to 225lbs for about 8 reps and finished with 135lbs for as many reps as possible. Usually end up somewhere in the ’20s for this. I then finished with either lat pulldowns or chinups. I would really like to get my chinups rolling this year. 3 sets of 15 reps is my goal for the end of the year. Chinups are also a whole lot easier the less weight/fat you have on your body. Especially if your strength levels stay the same.

Little Luke got fixed this weekend and that requires some periods of low activity to ensure nothing messes up the stitching. We took it easy this weekend both to recoup from last weekend and to watch Luke. We haven’t eaten out at all since Wednesday, which is a long time for us. My parents are coming over here this weekend instead of vice versa due to Luke not being able to play with the other dogs. They are bringing over Grapevine, which is hands down my favorite restaurant currently. Besides Chipotle and Mezeh of course. 😉

Journal Entry 324 – 28th Birthday

I turned 28 years old on Wednesday, November 14th. For some reason, this age sounds old to me and I don’t feel that old haha. That being said it was a great birthday that I’m pretty much celebrating over 4 days. On my actual birthday, Sarah and I just hung at the house and got some Chipotle and Halo Top. Thursday night we went out to Grapevine (favorite restaurant) with my parents and Friday we had some sushi from a local place. To finish off, we are having a party tonight at our house with some close friends. It should be good times. I should rename it “birth week” haha.

The Giants finally won on Monday night to get to 2-7. It was an interesting game though because the team chemistry felt great. The players were acting like they won the Superbowl afterward. This could be a great thing moving forward for the rest of the season. There may be a slim chance, we could win the division if we win out and the other teams drop a few more games. The Redskins are 6-3, so they would have to go 3-4 for us to beat them. Which is possible because their remaining schedule is not a cakewalk. Same for the Eagles. That just leaves the Cowboys, who have an easier schedule than the other teams, but honestly are not that far ahead of us believe or not.

I finally matched my previous bench press PR on my birthday. 225lbs for 8, 7, 5 reps.  My parents gave me some Orgain Protein Powder from Costco both Chocolate and Vanilla, per my request for a gift. This protein is impressive in terms of micronutrient content. It also mixes pretty thick, which I have missed in my protein powder.  The Chocolate is better than the Vanilla as the Vanilla tastes like it has too much greens powder in it. I’m not sure I’m going to make these a staple though, as the taste just isn’t strong enough, but we will see.

Until next time!

Journal Entry 322 – Updates

Since my last post, I decided to update the site a bit. I updated the background to look more like an actual journal and took down some pages that I thought made the blog look crowded. As a minimalist, I like the upgrade a lot. After reading some of my older articles, I’m not sure I agree 100% with all of them anymore, but it contains good information nevertheless.

Last weekend Sarah and I went to a co-worker and friend of mine’s wedding. It was great! The venue was a country setting and somewhat isolated from outside distractions. Everyone had a good time and the food and drinks were on point. 🙂

Unfortunately, this past week was very stressful. This is my long weekend and dear god it could not have come sooner. I really just felt like I needed a break. A break to get things done and just to relax and get out of my everyday grind. I think both physically and mentally I was starting to wear down. My gym performance is still plateaued, unfortunately. I plan to keep roughly 2 heavy days a week and the rest are going to be bodyweight movements and stretching. These movements have felt fantastic recently and heavy lifting has not felt so good. I think the extra rest from constant heavy weights every day is going to help break me through my plateau.

My diet has been so-so for the past week. I’ve been craving more oatmeal recently and I must say it is delicious. It’s also very filling. I have about 100-150grams to play with each day, so it is pretty easy to fit in. As for the brand, I always go with Quaker Oats Weight Control or Lower Sugar Maple and Brown Sugar. Hands down the best ever.

Sarah and I went to Grapevine Wednesday night with Sarah’s mom Laura and her Grandma. It was a great dinner! I think they now like the restaurant as much as we do. Sarah and I also had a date night last night. We went to Cooperhawk for some wine tasting and then went to Plaza Azteca for dinner. Copperhawks’ wine this month was not good haha. They usually have at least 3-4 wines that are good, but this month it was a very weak selection. We didn’t end up eating dinner until like 9:30-10:00 PM either. It was very delicious though.

Other than that I plan just to take it easy for the rest of the weekend. We are having some people over tonight for drinks, so that should be good times. Until next week!
